Do What You Love – Francesco Perri – Bumbleride Speed

Ultra Runner

Mountain Dad

Bumbleride Adventurer, Francesco Perri

You’re an Ultra Runner.  That’s super impressive.  Tell us about how your training has changed since becoming a Dad.

My wife and I have two children; a four year old boy and two year old girl. Having them has certainly made it difficult to get in the miles and time that I would like to. I’ve learned to incorporate them in my training as much as possible to make sure I’m still getting in quality time with them. So that means I’m often taking my daughter out in my Bumbleride  Speed for some quick road miles or I’m taking them both on short hikes in the mountains. I’ve also learned to try to get a run in whenever I can whether that’s early in the morning before everyone is up or at night after the kids have finally gone to bed.

What is your mindset when running with kids vs. running all on your own?

When I run with my daughter, my mindset is to get some quick road miles. I try not to be out for more than 90 minutes so my daughter doesn’t get restless.  She actually loves hanging out in the Speed so she’s pretty much always a good sport about it. I also make sure to have a few different treats to make sure to keep her happy. So that’s the big difference when I’m running with my daughter; I’m focused on trying to keep her happy. Running on my own is of course different because I don’t need to worry about keeping anyone else happy. It’s great to get out though either way.

Give some tips for parents that need that nudge to get back out on the road/trail for a run, whether it’s with or without your kids.

I was really worried before we had kids that I would have to sacrifice my love of running for them. I decided I then needed to share my love of getting out with them. I’ve started both of them off very young; getting them in the Bumbleride or putting them in my pack to get on the trails. I’ve noticed that my kids love to be outside, they love to explore the world. Get them out with you even if it’s for a short jog around the block. Being a parent is super stressful so you need that time to exercise so you can blow off steam and be more focused when you’re with your kids. I’d also suggest getting your kids on trails if you have anything close by. Let them get out in nature. They’ll love it and you’ll get to spend some great time with them.

“In running some gnarly climbs and fast descents, it was great handling both.  I loved it.”
